2018: WIPed into shape

20171212_124953[1]There’s an idea that you shouldn’t carry baggage from the old year into the new one. I don’t think that’s a bad idea really, but considering the time investment some craft and DIY projects have I think we can safely say there’s some wiggle room there. That said I do have a number of WIP projects that have been lingering for longer than is probably good for my crafting kharma. So for the month of January I’m WIPing myself into shape by gathering up all my in-progress projects and making a final decision of them. It’ll be either finish or frog, no two ways about it. I will also be finishing up as many projects this month as I can reasonably be expected. I won’t be able to finish all of them, but I definitely want the small projects taken care off an the larger ones under way. I’ll do a follow up post with all the WIPs and their eventual fate.

In addition to cleaning things up in my real life I’m also going to be cleaning up how I do things here. Part of my problem with posting has been that I don’t have any idea what to talk about, especially when life gets in the way of me being able to actually work on projects (though I absolutely plan on working on more projects this year). I figured coming up with themed posts would be a good way to handle things. I want to post four times a month, so I need four basic themes to work with:

Reviews: I’ll be reviewing all manner of things this year: yarn yarn/craft stores, hooks, needles, craft books, patterns, and events I might attend. As I expand my crafty repertoire I’ll also be reviewing things like tools, embroidery thread, sewing machines and fabrics, anything that has to do with projects I’m currently working on. Oh yes, and tutorials for when I need to learn a new skill.

Project Updates: This is self-explanatory, but I’ll definitely post about what I’ve done and what I plan to do that month, though I’ll probably mention finished projects or project updates in other posts. There may even be the occasional short “I finished this” post.

Tried It: These will be posts about new crafts I’ve tried AND unusual twists to crafts I already have experience with. One thing I’ve been meaning to do is try crocheting with a bunch of different materials, some typical and others less so, and record the experiences.

Craft Whatever: I’m giving myself fairly complete freedom over one of my posts per month. I did this over on my personal site too, though these posts won’t be as prone to anything goes, it still has to be craft related. I’m thinking I might post about things like The Art Assignment, Craft as Art, Yarn Bombing/Storming, highlight a particular crafter, etc. I might also get a bit metaphysical with thoughts of creativity or design, I’ll try to keep that to a minimum though.

I’ve also got some personal resolutions to get through for this year. I’m definitely going to be actually finishing up some of my crochet designs so I can post them for sale. I also want to enter a project in a contest, though I’m really nervous about that one. I also really want to try yarn bombing again and I already have some ideas that I’m going to get working on.

Welcome to the beginning of a New Year at Otakraft!

Thanks! >.> I wasn’t too great in January so I have a lot to make up for this month. I do have my first product to review picked out and I’ve got a few unusual materials and new crafts to try.
